durchzusetzen. Die Hardware-ID macht dazu Cookies
überflüssig & offenbar wird, was die dynamischen IP-
Adressen des Dial-up immer noch verbergen.

post/scrypt: Wer ungefähr weiss, welchen Marktanteil Intel
hat, möge trotzdem keinen versauten Sonntag haben.

Quali- & Quantität der Liste stehen in kausalem
Zusammenhang damit, dass die Subscribent/inn/en aufs
Erfreulichste scribieren.

Saturday January 30, 1999 WASHINGTON --
....
In response to the boycott, Intel announced that the
company would alter the software that turns the identification
feature on and off, but the privacy groups said that solution
was inadequate. So Intel executives flew to Washington for a
meeting Thursday where they defended the alteration, saying
it gives consumers both choice and control.

"They met with us for almost two hours," said Marc
Rotenberg, director of EPIC. "We decided after the meeting
that we would actually extend the boycott."

"There are two specific things we want: We want them to
agree to remove the processor serial number from any future
Pentium III chip, and we want them to agree to recall all
processors shipped with the processor serial number
enabled."

The privacy advocates then headed to the FTC to plead their
case for a recall of the chip, which Intel confirmed is already
being shipped to computer makers.
...
Chuck Mulloy, a spokesman for Intel, said ...we left the
meeting with a commitment from them that they would think
about what we said."
...
Intel is the world's largest computer chipmaker with $26.2
billion in sales last year.
...
Over the weekend, EPIC, Junkbusters and Privacy
International, began discussions about a boycott of Intel. On
Monday, as the protest was announced, the company said it
would alter software in the system so that the serial number
was disabled unless the computer user voluntarily turned it
on.
...
"They explained the software approach and we think it is
impractical and unworkable.....Rotenberg said. "We need a
hardware solution to a hardware problem. I think they were a
little surprised... We went through a couple of interesting
scenarios, which made it quite clear that the PSN [processor
serial number] is definitely going to be used in common
applications on the Internet. People were going to be asked
to identify themselves with the PSN."
