ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- A Greek privacy watchdog on Thursday fined Vodafone $100 million, saying the company did not protect its network in the wiretapping scandal of the prime minister.

The committee ruled the cell phone operator failed to adequately protect the network from unknown hackers who used a legitimate surveillance system to spy on top Greek officials during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

[...]

The hackers targeted 106 Vodafone users, including Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, senior military officers, human rights activists and journalists, from just before the August 2004 Games until March 2005.

Investigators have not discovered who was behind the phone taps.

The seven-member watchdog -- the Hellenic Authority for Information and Communication Security and Privacy -- found Vodafone's Greek operation responsible for obstructing its investigation and failing to report the installation of the surveillance software.

The panel also said it would question officials from technology equipment maker Ericsson to determine whether the Swedish-based company had any responsibility for the wiretaps scandal.

[...]
The Greek chief executives of Vodafone and Ericsson gave evidence at the parliamentary inquiry earlier this year and traded accusations over who was responsible for failing to protect the network.

Parliament is also investigating the death of a senior Greek Vodafone official, found hanged in March this year, shortly before the government was informed about the illegal surveillance.
